Petersham Apartments, Sydney

An apartment block designed with the architectural idea of "porosity" in mind. Studies were conducted to analyse various precedents to explore this idea.

Porosity

The apartment blocks are interlocked into five segments with a central courtyard void that faces north for the public communal spaces. The ground floor and foyer opens itself up to the landscape at a split half level and the voids that run through the buildings puncture down to the carpark below. The voids are intentionally created as "lungs" throughout the solid multi level blocks to explore the creation of layered movement, views, access, privacy, proxemics, as well as working together with the structure, tectonics, ventilation and light entering the built spaces.

With the combination of terraces (semi-private), enclosed rooms (private) and voids as well as public courtyards, porosity as an architectural idea was integrated throughout the entire design process to explore its impact and opportunities to a living environment.
